Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins with a warm welcome from your professional driver-guide upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing about your safari, you will begin your scenic journey north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and offers a stunning introduction to Rwanda’s landscape. As you leave the capital behind, the terrain opens into a mosaic of rolling green hills, terraced farms, and traditional villages. This region’s natural beauty is what gives Rwanda its famous nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
As you approach Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, the towering Virunga Volcanoes begin to dominate the skyline, setting a dramatic tone for your adventure.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – A Life-Changing Wildlife Experience
Today is the highlight of your safari—gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the Kinigi park headquarters by around 7:00 AM for registration and a detailed briefing by park rangers. During this session, you will learn about gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and trekking guidelines.
You will then be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and grouped with a small number of trekkers (maximum of 8 participants). Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will begin your trek into the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains.
The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The terrain varies from gentle slopes to steeper, muddy paths, but your guides will ensure a safe and manageable pace while sharing insights about the ecosystem.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as silverbacks display their strength, juveniles play, and mothers nurture their young. This close encounter is deeply moving and widely regarded as one of the most powerful wildlife experiences in the world.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and a late lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying the lodge’s views, or reflecting on the day’s incredible experience.
Golden Monkey Tracking & Leisure in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, return to the park headquarters for your second primate adventure—golden monkey tracking.
Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga region and are known for their striking golden-orange fur and energetic behavior. The tracking experience typically takes 2 to 3 hours and is less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, making it a relaxed yet equally rewarding activity.
As you move through the bamboo forest, you will observe these playful primates leaping between branches, feeding on bamboo shoots, and interacting in social groups. Their agility and vibrant appearance make this experience especially enjoyable for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure. You may choose to take a guided nature walk, visit nearby communities, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings and panoramic views of the volcanoes.
Return to Kigali, City Tour & Departure
After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Kigali, a drive of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours through Rwanda’s scenic countryside.
Upon arrival, enjoy a guided city tour of Kigali if not done on Day 1. Highlights include a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a deeply moving site that provides insight into Rwanda’s history and remarkable recovery. You may also explore local craft markets for souvenirs or enjoy a relaxing lunch in the city.
Depending on your flight schedule, your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your 4-day Rwanda gorilla trekking and golden monkey safari.
